A Historic South Boston Home Reimagined for Modern Family Living
Some homes carry their history proudly.
This one does too, but it also steps confidently into a new chapter.
Set along the tight streets of South Boston, this 1860s home required a full reinvention to meet the needs of a young family looking for space, comfort, and modern function. In a neighborhood where buildings sit shoulder to shoulder and curb space is always contested, expanding and reorganizing a historic home takes both creative design and careful execution.
The result is a thoughtful renovation that blends historic character with modern family living.
A Collaborative Renovation by Pitman and Wardley Architects and Foley Custom Builders
Pitman and Wardley Architects led the design effort, reshaping the home through a full gut renovation combined with a substantial addition.
Their approach respected the original structure while creating the kind of layout the house never had before. The redesign introduced a true primary suite, expanded family living spaces, and a rear terrace that extends daily life outdoors.
The addition also made something rare in South Boston possible.
Garage parking.
Foley Custom Builders carried the project through construction, navigating the logistical challenges that come with building in one of Boston’s densest neighborhoods.
Deliveries had to be precisely timed. Materials had to be staged carefully. Trades worked in tight quarters with very little room for error.
Despite those constraints, the team preserved key historic elements that anchor the home’s identity, including the original staircase and the front entry doors.
A Main Living Level Designed for Connection
Inside, the main living floor was reorganized to create a more natural flow between cooking, dining, and gathering spaces.
The kitchen anchors the level with dramatic marble surfaces, bright cabinetry, and warm herringbone flooring. It provides both visual structure and everyday functionality.
Nearby, the dining area brings balance with darker wood tones and sculptural lighting that adds depth to the room.
At the front of the house, the living room leans into comfort. Soft neutral tones, layered textures, and a fireplace create a space that feels welcoming whether the family is entertaining friends or settling in for a quiet weeknight.
Spaces Designed With Personality
Upstairs, the home reveals a lighter and more playful side.
The children’s bedrooms are filled with personality, featuring patterned wallpaper, custom storage, and details that make each room feel tailored to its occupant.
The primary suite takes a calmer approach.
Clean lines, a vaulted ceiling, and a carefully restrained palette create a quiet retreat within the house. A fireplace adds just enough presence to give the room warmth and character without overpowering its simplicity.
Bathrooms and Utility Spaces Done Right
The bathrooms continue the home’s achromatic design language.
Stone surfaces, glass details, and subtle textures carry the aesthetic forward without relying on overly decorative elements.
Laundry areas are thoughtfully designed with built-in storage that keeps everyday clutter organized and out of view.
Even the lower-level office introduces a moment of bold personality with patterned walls and custom cabinetry that make the workspace feel intentional rather than purely functional.
A Historic Home Ready for Its Next Chapter
Projects like this succeed when architecture, construction, and lifestyle all align.
Pitman and Wardley Architects created a design that honors the historic structure while reshaping it for modern living. Foley Custom Builders delivered the craftsmanship and careful coordination needed to execute that vision in a dense urban setting.
The result is a home that feels polished but still comfortable.
Modern without losing its roots.
And perfectly suited for a young family building their own story inside a historic South Boston house.
From behind the camera, that balance shows up immediately. The spaces feel layered, welcoming, and full of life.
Exactly the way a family home should.
